SPOTLIGHT
Fireworks are a traditional part of America's July 4th Independence Day celebration; and for many of us the 4th of July just isn't complete without sparklers and the ooh's and aah's as it gets dark and the big show begins. Yet did you know that the possession and use (without a permit) of fireworks of any kind is illegal in the city of Fort Collins? The penalty for a fireworks violation will result in confiscation of these fireworks, and issuance of a summons into municipal court and a fine of $250. To avoid a summons, a costly fine, a possible fireworks-related injury, or starting a fire, it's best to leave the fireworks shows to the professionals. Fort Collins law prohibits the possession and/or use of fireworks of any kind within the city limits. This includes fireworks frequently sold outside city limits and legal to use elsewhere, as well as larger fireworks sold just across the border in Wyoming. Fireworks purchased in Wyoming or other states that allow the sales of larger fireworks, are illegal to possess any where in the State of Colorado. Colorado summers are often hot and dry. Fireworks use outside the city limits increases the danger of wild fires while use within the city limits can present a fire danger to homes and property. The Independence Day celebration can quickly be ruined when careless and inappropriate use of fireworks results in injury. Every year nationwide injuries and deaths occur from fireworks. According to the US Consumer Products Safety Commission, last year nearly 10,000 people were treated for fireworks-related injuries. Many required hospitalization. The estimated annual cost of fireworks-related injuries in the U.S. is approximately $100 million. Enjoy Independence Day safely.
