 2008 Transformer Cabinets Mural Project
In 2006 the City of Fort Collins Utilities Light & Power Department partnered with the cities Art in Public Places Program to come up with a plan to help mitigate the graffiti, reduce maintenance costs, and add art to the Fort Collins community. The plan was to work with local artists to paint transformer cabinets with bright and colorful murals of intricate designs that would make the cabinets a less attractive surface to graffiti. A protective sealant is also applied to help protect the finished murals.
This program is innovative in its use of art to help solve the social issue of vandalism on city property. This is being achieved while simultaneously supporting our rich resource of local artists. This year we are also including murals painted by local non-profit organizations. At the end of this year we will have forty cabinets with a diverse collection of painted murals on them.
This summer we have 9 artists and 2 community groups painting on cabinets. Check out these artists while you are around town. All of these transformer boxes are in the downtown Fort Collins area.
