Adaptive Recreation Opportunities: Aiming for Independence

The City of Fort Collins Recreation Division provides equal and quality recreation for community members with disabilities. Adaptive Recreation Opportunities (ARO) strives to ensure that people with disabilities have the necessary accommodations or support to participate in any recreation program at their highest level of independence. Specialized programming is also offered to increase opportunities and meet unique needs of individuals. A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist oversees the creation of support for each person and the specialized program offerings made available. So what do you like to do? Aquatics? Sports and games? Arts and Crafts? YOU CAN DO IT and ARO is here to help.

The Adaptive Recreation Opportunities program provides unique services and classes to individuals of all ages and abilities. Exciting learning opportunities are available through internships and volunteering.

ARO Summer Highlights

Disc Golf Support!
Disc Golf A great big thanks to Sue Lande of the Northern Colorado Disc Golf Association and John Bird of the Rocky Mountain Disc Golf Association for their involvement and support of an ARO Disc Golf class this summer.

Sue provided equipment and her expertise during the four-week session to train staff and teach participants how to play the great game of disc golf. John generously donated 8 discs to the ARO program and spent one evening sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport.

All who participated are definitely hooked on the game that has become a Fort Collins passion.

Whitewater Raft Trip
Raft Trip

Fort Collins is lucky to be located near one of the most beautiful, whitewater rivers in Colorado, the Cache La Poudre. Fifteen ARO participants and staff had the chance to take an adventure white water rafting with Rocky Mountain Adventures Outfitter (RMA) in July.

RMA has been running the ARO raft trips each summer for the past 4-5 years and they do a fantastic job! We shared lots of paddle high fives and great jobs as we traveled down the class three rapids. The scenery was beautiful and the water was exciting and everyone had a blast!
