Effective as of Jan. 1, 2008
Residential customers may choose the electric rate that is most cost-effective, based on their electric use. Fort Collins Utilities offers programs, incentives and tips for conserving energy.
Two rates are available:
-
Energy rate – typically best for customers using less than 1,400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month on average. On this rate, you are charged based on your energy use (kWh). This is the amount of electricity used during the month. This measurement is like the odometer on your car, telling you the number of miles traveled.
-
Demand rate – typically best for customers using more than 1,400 kWh per month. On this rate, you are charged based on
- your highest average demand (kW) for any 15-minute period during the billing month; and
- energy use (kWh). This is the amount of electricity used during the month. This measurement is like the odometer on your car, telling you the number of miles traveled.

- On the cost-comparison chart, find your average monthly electric use in the left hand column.
- Then refer to the “cost” columns for each rate.
Demand rate costs are based on the demand readings of all customers on this rate during a three-year period. An individual customer’s kW demand can vary significantly from the averages used in this table. Your actual demand and corresponding costs may be higher or lower.
- Newly constructed residences are assigned the energy rate.
- Customers moving into an existing residence inherit the rate of the previous resident. These customers have 90 days to change rates without incurring a service charge.
- All other customers may change rates (PDF 255KB) once per year.
Customers are responsible for maintaining safe and unobstructed meter access. If access is not available, customers will be assigned the energy rate.
For detailed information about electric rates, see the Electric Rate Schedules (PDF 532KB) and the Electric Service Rules and Regulations (PDF 284KB).
