On Tuesday, Oct 14th, 2008 the Business Environmental Program Series "Eco-friendly Transportation Options for Fort Collins’ Workforce" provided various presentations about future economic development along the Mason Corridor, including Transit Oriented Development, employee-based Transfort programs, the greenhouse gas cost of driving your car and what the City of Fort Collins is doing to support alternative fuels.

NewRoute 16 (Mon-Sat, year-round)

WESTbound service begins at Harmony & Corbett at 6:41AM and ends at 6:41PM

EASTbound service begins at The Square Shopping Center at 6:20AM and ends 6:20PM

Route detail: This route provides service from The Square Shopping Center to East Harmony Rd. via Boardwalk and east to Ziegler Rd.

Key stops include:

Mon-Fri Buses run every 30 minutes
Saturday Buses run every 60 minutes

New Route 17 (Mon-Sat, year-round)

NORTHbound service begins at Corbett and Harmony at 6:42AM and ends at 7:00PM.

SOUTHbound service begins at Midpoint and Prospect Pkwy at 6:17AM and ends at 7:37PM.

Route detail: This route provides service from the Mid Point area, along Timberline, and east on Harmony to Ziegler. Transfers to Routes 16 and 18.

New Route 18 (Mon-Sat, year-round)

NORTHbound service begins at Mid Point and Prospect Pkwy at 6:05AM and ends at 6:30PM.

SOUTHbound service begins at the Downtown Transit Center at 6:52AM and ends at 7:14PM.

Route detail: This route provides service from the Downtown Transit Center, along Whedbee and Stover, then along E. Prospect to the Mid Point area. Transfers to Routes 1,5,8,9,14,15,and 17.

Safety and security

Compared to road systems, transit systems are significantly safer. Trips with similar destinations result in 2 million fewer deaths, injuries and accidents when made by public transit than by car, adding up to between $2 billion and $5 billion per year in safety benefits. The National Safety Council estimates that riding the bus is over 170 times safer than automobile travel.

Energy conservation

The supply of oil is finite. Public transportation is crucial in helping to save energy by using it wisely.

• Americans use more energy for transportation than for any other activity. Nearly 43% of America's energy resources are used in transportation, compared to industrial use (39%); residential use (11%) and commercial use (7%). Any serious effort to address energy conservation must focus largely on transportation.
• For every passenger mile traveled, public transportation is twice as fuel efficient as private automobiles.
• Public transportation already saves more than 855 million gallons of gasoline or 45 million barrels of oil a year. The number is equivalent to the energy used to heat, cool and operate one-forth of all American homes annually, or half the energy used to manufacture all computers and electronic equipment in America annually.
• All Transfort buses run on either bio-diesel or Compressed Natural Gas
