How to Report a Safety Problem for Principals and School Officials

To report a problem, please select the appropriate source:

1. Transportation Planning's policy is to work directly with the School Principal. We prefer that the initial contact and request for service come directly from the School Principal. The Principal is the person of authority at the school, the person who knows the school travel environment and operations, and the person who can oversee a problem-solving process with the school community and our office. Our policy is to refer parents, residents, students, and other interested individuals to the School Principal before initiating a school traffic safety project.
2. Identify the perceived traffic safety problem. Be prepared to discuss the following information.

1. Name and address of the school
2. Description of the perceived problem
3. Specific location of the traffic problem
4. Days and times of day when problem occurs
5. Dates and times of reported and unreported collisions and near-collisions
6. When the problem started
7. Opinion as to possible causes of the problem
8. Perceived dangers to pedestrians, bicyclists, students, parents, staff, residents, and property as a result of the problem
9. Efforts implemented to date to resolve the problem (education/information, enforcement, engineering)
10. Results you hope to achieve (reduced speed, lower traffic volume, better traffic circulation, better parking controls, reduced collisions, reduced risk to pedestrians, better bike parking, other)
11. Your name and contact information
