Recidivism
Young people who come through Restorative Justice are checked for later violations of the law. This is called the recidivism rate, the percentage who commit another offense. National recidivism rates, outside of restorative justice, range from 16%-91%. There is a tremendous range because they deal with different programs and different populations.
Recidivism Rate at 12 months past program completion.
(This check includes any offense, including drug and alcohol, but not smoking violations.)
8.4% for first time offenders
9.9% for those with prior offenses
2.2% re-offended with a same or similar crime
(This includes offenses that fall in the same general category as the offense that brought them to RJ)
Of the 1018 young people who completed the program by 12/30/2006, 24% came into the program with prior offenses.
This recidivism check was done in June 2007 on the FC Police Services Tiburon system for all young people who completed contracts by 12/30/2006.
