Why should you recycle your Christmas tree?
Recycling your tree saves valuable landfill space (and money on your trash bill), and trees ground into mulch provide good ground cover that reduces soil erosion, deters weed growth and conserves water in landscaping.

How do you recycle your Christmas tree?
To recycle Christmas trees through the City of Fort Collins / Larimer County drop-off program, make sure your tree is free of all decorations. This means removing all lights, tinsel, garland, plastic wrap, tree stands, wire, rope, nails and all other foreign materials from trees before recycling them. Flocked trees (those decorated with fake snow) cannot be recycled and should be placed at the curb for trash collection (keep in mind you may incur additional charges; contact your trash hauler for more information). If you transport your tree in a plastic bag to the drop-off site, the bag MUST be removed before recycling the tree. Otherwise, pieces of plastic will be in the finished mulch product.
This program is for Christmas trees only. Please, no household, construction or yard waste is to be left at Christmas tree drop-off sites.

Are Christmas tree vendors allowed to drop-off their unsold trees?
No. The City and County operate the tree recycling program for citizens to use. Unsold Christmas trees should be disposed of at the Larimer County Landfill, 5887 S. Taft Hill between 8:00 a.m.and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For landfill rate information, call (970) 498-5760.
