Project Overview and Goals
The advent of easy, and nearly universal access to the Internet in our country makes it the natural choice for us to use to exchange information, not only locally, but nationally and even internationally.
The ubiquitous World Wide Web is the perfect medium for us to illustrate to communities everywhere what we are doing, and how we are doing it, in a visually interesting way. It is the best method available today for disseminating large amounts of accurate, timely, reliable information about Emergency Management to a vast audience, in a very short time.
The City of Fort Collins Office of Emergency Management Website Project will, we hope, continue to be a valuable resource for many years to come. It is one of the premier projects for which we have received funding through Project Impact.
The primary content of the site is information concerning disaster mitigation, public education, planning and response. It will cover subjects such as flooding, drought, fires, blizzards, hail storms, lighting, tornadoes, dam failures, and high wind events. In addition, it will serve as a means for other communities to obtain updates, success stories, and lessons learned through our Project Impact efforts. It is also intended to demonstrate that a website can be a very effective tool for city governments and Emergency Managers to use to better serve the citizenry.
Here are some of the specific goals for our Website Project:
- To provide information about specific local disaster hazards and preparedness. This will include a history of natural disasters that have occurred in Fort Collins.
- To educate by furnishing general preparedness information and links to other sources of information.
- To notify the community of the status of local emergency management projects and developments such as; new methods of emergency notification; disaster mitigation projects such as stormwater improvements; and new legislation related to disaster safety that may affect them.
- To increase public knowledge concerning severe weather events and how to understand various weather watches and warnings.
- To provide immediate information and status updates during an emergency event, including specific recommendations for action when necessary.
- To provide timely access to local stream and precipitation information.
- To regularly document the activities directly related to Project Impact so that the public, as well as other communities and agencies, can follow our progress.
