Project Impact - Monthly Update
July 15, 1999 to August 15, 1999

  • Real Time Flood Inundation Mapping
The project team is continuing the process of geomorphology and TIN completion. Meetings are ongoing between our project team and Merrick & Company regarding this process.

  • OEM Website
Information continues to be added weekly, including more detail on the progress of our activities and projects.

  • Stream and Precipitation Gages
Our gages are working very well and have alarmed us on several heavy cloudbursts this month. We are now reporting live data from our gage software (StormWatch by DIAD) to the National Weather Service in Boulder. We are hoping to eventually have information from our data disseminated through the LDAD system.

  • Project Impact First Year Anniversary
OEM Director Glenn Levy and Associate Director Iola Fleischer visited the FEMA Region VIII office in Denver for the Project Impact annual review on August 17th. Sherryl Hahl conducted the meeting and there were several other Project Impact FEMA officials in attendance. We are planning a fall public information campaign to update the public on our accomplishments during our first year as a Project Impact community.

  • Local Data Acquisition and Dissemination System (LDAD)
Iola Fleischer and Blair Leist, along with Marsha Hilmes and Bob Smith from Stormwater visited the Forecast Systems Laboratory in Boulder for a training session and demonstration on LDAD, hosted by Deborah Miller. LDAD is now up and running in our OEM office. We will be providing feedback to FSL as we learn the system. We were also treated to a tour of their spectacular new building and were invited to sit in on a FSL Weather Forecast briefing.

  • Emergency Auto-Dialer
We are currently coordinating with Dialogic Corporation on the configuration of our auto-dialer notification system. Installation and operator training are scheduled for August 31st through September 2nd.

  • Disaster Recovery and Response Course
Iola Fleischer and Blair Leist attended the "Disaster Response and Recovery" class sponsored by the Colorado OEM in Frisco August 3-5.

  • Newspaper Articles
The Fort Collins Coloradoan printed a 3-day series marking the 2nd anniversary of our 1997 flood. Topics included weather, preparedness, and mitigation efforts that have taken place since the flood.

  • 1997 Flood Memorial Ceremony
On July 28, 1999 the Fort Collins community unveiled and dedicated the 1997 Flood Memorial sculpture, "Human Spirit," created by Jack Kreutzer. The ceremony took place at Creekside Park, near the spot where five women lost their lives two years earlier.

  • Y2K Brochure
A new brochure, "Plan & Prepare for Y2K and Beyond" is now available in our community. This was developed in partnership with OEM and the Community Y2K Steering Committee. In addition to preparedness tips and local contact information, the brochure outlines the OEM's newly developed City Response Plan to be used in the event of any large scale emergency.

  • Community Education
Iola Fleischer represented the OEM at a community Y2K meeting and Disaster Preparedness meeting on July 17th at Poudre Fire Authority Station 10. Discussion focused on Y2K and disaster preparedness. We displayed a sample 72-hour emergency supplies kit.
