Over 150 events are going on this summer through the Fort Collins Regional Library District! Check the online calendar for more complete schedule and more information.

BE A PART OF YOUR LIBRARY'S FUTURE

Are you interested in playing an important role in the future of your library district and leaving your mark for future generations of readers? If so, be a part of the Fort Collins Regional Library District's search for a new name. The Library District Board of Trustees has decided to change the District's official name as part of a multi-dimensional project to reestablish itself now that it is no longer a municipal library and to strengthen its relationship with each and every one of its patrons. The District is soliciting public input for a new name that describes and reflects the District's entire service area. The chosen name will be a part of the District's entire current makeover and will be used for years to come.

We invite you to email name suggestions to the Executive Director or fill out a form at either the Main Library at 201 Peterson or the Harmony Library located at Shields and Harmony. The District requests that all names be submitted by July 18th. They will then be reviewed by a task force composed of Library District Trustees and staff and narrowed down to the top five. Those five names will be submitted to the Library District Board of Trustees who will select the name that they feel best exemplifies the new role the library has been assigned by its residents. The official name change will take place in early fall.

In addition to a change in name, the Fort Collins Regional Library District is finalizing a District Strategic Service Plan and will also be creating a District logo and composing new mission and vision statements. The change from a municipal library to a district suggests the need for a redefined image in order to better suit the role the Fort Collins Regional Library District is now filling in the communities it serves.

We are blessed in this community with a strong, vibrant library, thanks to your support of the Fort Collins Regional Library District. ANNIE WALK CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY - AUGUST 23, 2008

Annie the Railroad Dog "Annie" was a stray collie mix who was adopted by railroad workers in 1934. She spent her life as an unofficial ambassador to Fort Collins, greeting passengers at the train depot and bringing a bright, welcoming presence during the bleak years of the 1930's and 1940's. According to Phil Walker's Visions Along the Poudre Valley, everyone loved her. Newcomers were often amazed to see local people get off the train and run to greet the little dog before greeting their families. Today she is a cherished local legend and the bronze statue commemorating her memory will welcome visitors to the Main Library. Local artist Dawn Weimer created the 29" bronze statue which portrays a dog with a paw raised in greeting. Annie's gravesite, located on Mason Street, near the intersection of Laporte Avenue, is a historical landmark.

Each year in August the Friends of the Library celebrate Annie the Railroad Dog's birthday with the Annual Annie Walk in Library Park. The fun-filled morning starts with a 1.5 mile dog walk. Dogs and their owners will begin at Annie's statue in front of the Library, and walk to her former home at the historic railroad station on Mason Street. After the walk, Library Park hosts a dog carnival. Proceeds from the event are used to purchase children's books and materials.

Check out the book Annie, the railroad dog : "a true story" by Arlene Ahlbrandt and learn more about Annie.

READ ON FORT COLLINS

For six years Read On Fort Collins has encouraged people within our community to read a book, to discuss it with friends, to participate in community activities related to the book, and to hear the author speak.

This year Read On Fort Collins has selected Julie Otsuka's novel When the Emperor Was Divine. Ms. Otsuka's family was interned during WWII. Her grandfather was arrested by the FBI the day after Pearl Harbor and her mother, then 11 years old, and her uncle and grandmother were sent to Topaz, Utah for the duration of the war. Otsuka says that rather than using family stories for material, she did a lot of research because her mother doesn't have clear memories of camp. Otsuka says of her novel: "I wanted to write a novel about real people... their experience is universal not only for Japanese Americans, but for people of any ethnic group. The predicament of the family in my novel ... is that of ordinary people caught up in the extraordinary."

Julie Otsuka will speak in Fort Collins on Sunday, October 26, 2008. Related activities and discussions will be scheduled during the year. The Friends of the Library is one of the sponsors of Read On Fort Collins. Go to www.readonfc.org for more information.
